A signature dish of the Maghreb region, couscous comes in many varieties: royal, vegetarian, fish, and more. For each recipe, there is an Alsace wine that can bring out its flavors. Follow our advice to create the perfect pairings.

What wines go well with couscous?

Couscous, a hearty family dish from North Africa, is one of the French's favorite foods. There are many variations on this traditional dish: with wheat semolina, lots of vegetables, one or more meats (merguez sausage, lamb, beef, poultry, kebabs, grilled meats, etc.) or sometimes fish (fish couscous: cod, monkfish, pollock, etc.).

To ensure the most enjoyable tasting experience, from the glass to the plate, we offer our advice on the best food and wine pairings for your couscous, helping you choose a wine to complement your recipe.

Couscous and young, fruity red wine

Contrary to what you might think, some red wines go wonderfully well with couscous. Often prepared with chickpeas, meat, raisins, and lots of spices, couscous royal offers a real explosion of flavors on the palate, much to the delight of our taste buds.

To avoid masking these wonderful aromas, choose a young, fruity red wine. Our best red wine for couscous is our Pinot Noir des Chasseurs de Lune, AOC Vin d'Alsace. This light red wine is the perfect match!

Couscous and rosé wine: the classic pairing

If you prefer traditional rosé wines to enhance this dish, there are also many possible pairings. With its semolina cooked in a spicy broth, couscous calls for fruity and sunny aromas.

Because in Alsace we can also put sunshine in your glass, we suggest choosing our Pinot Noir Rosé, which goes particularly well with couscous made with poultry such as chicken, bringing a lovely freshness to the palate.

Couscous and white wine: let yourself be surprised!

It is not always customary to serve white wine with couscous or any other oriental or exotic dish (such as tagine). But think again and let yourself be surprised by this amazing food and wine pairing!

For sweet and savory tagines, a Gewurztraminer or Pinot Gris without too much sugar (not too sweet or syrupy) from the Chasseurs de Lune range will go very well with the flavors of these dishes. These fairly aromatic wines will balance the very spicy side of Oriental cuisine.

We hope you enjoy tasting our wine suggestions to bring out the flavor of your couscous!

With its rich flavors and textures, couscous is the perfect canvas for a variety of wine pairings. Fruity Pinot Noir, refreshing rosé, or aromatic white wine: there's something for everyone, as long as it complements the dish. All that's left to do is choose your wine... and enjoy!
