Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer

Superb, powerful wines

Gewurztraminer is an aromatic variety of an old Alsatian grape known as Traminer. Its name comes from the German word "gewurz", meaning "spicy".

Cultivated mainly on hillsides, Gewurztraminer is an early grape variety with a low yield. It is classed as a "noble grape variety" of Alsace wines, along with Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat. It generally has a high alcohol content, sometimes up to 14% vol. and more, combined with relatively low acidity.

One of the most aromatic and distinctive white wines, it produces superb, powerful, full-bodied and robust wines with notes of spices, exotic fruits or roses, sometimes with hints of leather, smoke or liquorice.

The particularly aromatic Gewurztraminer grape variety was introduced to Alsace in the mid-16th century. In France, this grape variety is mainly cultivated in Alsace, where it accounts for just over 20% of the vineyards. Gewurztraminer has had the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) label since 1962.
