Where does the deposit in white wines come from?

We generally expect a glass of wine to be perfectly clear and crystal clear. Some people may therefore be a little surprised to find grainy or powdery residues when pouring the last glass from a bottle or looking at the bottom of it. Where does this deposit come from?
