Pinot Noir and red wine: What's the difference?

Pinot Noir is a red wine. But not all red wines are Pinot Noir. What sets it apart from other red grape varieties is its finesse, its lightness, and its unique ability to express the terroir.

Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gamay: there are many red grape varieties in France. Each produces a red wine with its own distinct character. Pinot Noir stands out from the rest with a very distinctive profile: thin skin, silky tannins, a lighter color, and delicate aromas. When it comes to red wine and Pinot Noir, there’s a world of nuances.

What Sets Pinot Noir Apart from Other Red Grape Varieties

Pinot Noir is a noble grape variety, recognized as one of France’s great reds. Its uniqueness lies not in power but in finesse. Where other grape varieties seek structure and density, Pinot Noir focuses on elegance and aromatic precision.

The Skin and Color

Pinot Noir has thin skins. Its color ranges from light ruby to garnet, rarely darker. It is one of the most transparent red wines. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with their thick skins, produce much darker and denser colors. This thinness of skin also explains the delicacy of Pinot Noir’s tannins.

Tannins

This is the most noticeable difference on the palate:

Pinot Noir: fine, silky tannins, never harsh
Cabernet Sauvignon: powerful, structured tannins, built for aging
Merlot: round, more pronounced, velvety tannins
Syrah: firm tannins, with body and density
Gamay: very light tannins, even fruitier than Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir doesn’t coat the mouth like a Cabernet. It glides, it lingers, and it leaves a delicate impression rather than a heavy one.

Aromas

Each red grape variety has its own aromatic signature:

Pinot Noir: cherry, raspberry, delicate red fruits. With age: forest floor, truffle, leather, spices
Syrah: black fruits, pepper, violet, power
Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant, green pepper, woody notes
Merlot: plum, ripe fruit, roundness
Cabernet Franc: red berries, bell pepper, vegetal notes

Pinot Noir is the most delicate of them all. Its aromas do not impose themselves; they reveal themselves. It is a wine that requires attention to be fully appreciated.

Structure

Pinot Noir is a light- to medium-bodied red wine. It emphasizes elegance, not bulk. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are full-bodied wines, built for long aging and paired with hearty dishes. Pinot Noir prefers finesse. This is not a weakness; it is part of its identity.

Is Pinot Noir a light red wine?

Pinot Noir is often lighter than other great French reds. Its fine tannins and light color are evidence of this. But “light” does not mean “simple.” The finest cuvées, such as our L’Impatient from the Vorbourg Grand Cru, develop a structure and complexity that rival those of the great French reds.

Why does Pinot Noir have a lighter color?

Its skin is thinner than that of other red grape varieties. Fewer pigments are extracted during winemaking, resulting in a lighter color. It is also this thin skin that gives it its silky tannins and delicate aromas.

Is Pinot Noir a great red wine?

Pinot Noir is one of the most noble grape varieties in the world. In Alsace, it is the only permitted red grape variety and, since 2024, has held the Grand Cru Vorbourg appellation. It is a renowned, demanding variety that rewards the winemakers’ meticulous work.
