Vintage Crémant: what makes it special?

A vintage Crémant d'Alsace is, above all, the memory of a single year. This uniqueness is reflected in the tasting experience and conveys the story of an exceptional harvest. Its unique expression is specific to the Alsatian terroir and affirms a style directly linked to the days and nights that shaped the development of the grapes over a single year.

What is a vintage Crémant d'Alsace?

Born in the heart of the Alsace wine region, Crémant d'Alsace is a sparkling wine with appellation status (AOC since 1976) produced using traditional methods: secondary fermentation in the bottle and aging on racks (bottles laid down), which produces fine bubbles and a very distinct freshness. The style of this wine is born from the harmony of the Alsatian terroir: sun-drenched days, cool nights, and perfectly balanced aromatic maturity, without ever becoming heavy. When a year proves worthy of a vintage, our Chasseurs de Lune, guided by the expertise of our oenologist, combine their know-how to craft an exceptional cuvée, made exclusively from the grapes of that unique harvest.

Which grape varieties are used for a vintage Crémant?

Next, we need to talk about grape varieties for Crémant d'Alsace. Each variety adds a specific characteristic and influences the profile: Pinot Blanc (the main variety, signature of the region), Auxerrois (roundness), Riesling and Chardonnay (tension, purity), Pinot Gris (depth) and finally Pinot Noir, which is used exclusively for rosé Crémants.

Each grape variety brings its own unique touch and shapes the identity of Crémant Millésimé: Pinot Blanc, the majority variety, embodies the classic signature of the region; Auxerrois offers its delicious roundness; Riesling and Chardonnay infuse tension and purity; while Pinot Gris brings depth and structure. Only Pinot Noir is used in the composition of rosé Crémants, revealing all its finesse in the color. Speaking of color, there are several styles of Crémant d'Alsace, which vary in sugar content and color:

  • Extra-brut: a dry, precise Crémant with a lot of tension and a clean finish
  • Crémant d'Alsace Brut: lively, versatile, perfect as an aperitif
  • Demi-sec: softer, ideal at the end of a meal
  • Rosé: made exclusively from Pinot Noir: red fruits, delicious freshness

We apply the same manufacturing standards to every style of Crémant d'Alsace, using a range of grape varieties and dosages to create expressive, elegant Crémants d'Alsace that are perfect for any occasion.

Vintage Crémant: how does the year really change the wine?

A vintage Crémant is made from grapes from a single harvest. We do not blend several years: we showcase the character of a specific vintage. This Crémant is only produced when the quality of the year warrants it.

The imprint of a year depends on the weather, the ripeness of the grapes, and their health. In Alsace, a microclimate shaped by the Vosges mountains protects the vineyards: the days are sunny, the nights are cool, and the winters are dry. This alternation promotes ripe but lively grapes, with preserved acidity and beautiful aromatic purity—ideal conditions for precise and balanced Crémant bases.

All these criteria contribute, each year, to the slow and prolonged ripening of our Alsatian grapes.

Aging of vintage Crémants: why is it often longer?

A vintage Crémant spends more time resting on slats. The result? A fine, creamy mousse, extraordinary depth of texture, and brioche aromas, without ever losing its freshness. Specifically, the year influences:

  • freshness (natural acidity).
  • aromas (citrus, flowers, and ripe fruit).
  • the structure (mouthfeel, length, aging potential).

Are there good years for a vintage Crémant?

Vintage Crémant d'Alsace is produced in years when nature finds its balance: healthy grapes, lively freshness, and aromatic maturity. Each vintage has its own personality: sometimes tense and lemony, sometimes full-bodied and indulgent. More than a fixed classification, it is the unique expression of a year that the winery chooses to celebrate.

When should you choose a vintage wine over a non-vintage wine?

The difference is not one of "better" or "worse." A vintage wine reflects the identity of a particular year and adds a touch of rarity, naturally associated with special occasions. A non-vintage wine embodies consistency and conviviality for everyday celebrations.

Choose a vintage Crémant to enhance a gourmet meal, celebrate with family, or mark an important date. Giving a bottle bearing the year of birth of a loved one is also a lovely gesture, intimately linked to moments that matter.

What dishes should you serve with a vintage Crémant?

White fish in a light sauce, creamy poultry, mild veal, mushroom risotto, mature Comté cheese. For vintage rosé: salmon, duck breast, dishes with red berries. Serve at 7-9°C in a tulip glass.

How should it be stored and how long should it be kept?

Store your vintage Crémant d'Alsace lying down, away from light, in a cool, stable place (around 10–12°C), without vibrations or strong odors. To serve, chill to 7–9°C, open gently, and serve in a tulip glass to preserve the fine bubbles and precise aromatics.
