Where does the deposit in white wines come from?

We usually expect a glass of wine to be absolutely crystal-clear. So some people may be a little surprised to find a grainy or powdery residue when they look at the bottom of a bottle or pour the last glass. Where does this deposit come from? Can it damage the taste of the wine or have a harmful effect on the drinker’s health?
