What to drink with the sauerkraut ?

Sauerkraut is the queen of Alsatian gastronomy, a great winter dish. Cabbage, potatoes, stewed pork and sausages... The tradition of the wine region Alsace in a plate!

But what to drink with sauerkraut? What food and wine pairings are possible with the recipe for garnished sauerkraut or sauerkraut from the sea? Here are our suggestions of Alsatian grape varieties and the best wines to choose from!

Alsatian Sauerkraut and wines from the region

The dry white wine of Alsace: a regional and traditional agreement

In the typical sauerkraut recipe, the cabbage is simmered with bacon in white wine before adding the other toppings. Tradition dictates that we serve our guests the same wine used for cooking sauerkraut.

In general, a dry white wine from Alsace (or even a Crémant d'Alsace) is served instead to respect the local agreement. You can therefore leave with a glass of Pinot Blanc, Riesling or Sylvaner. These grape varieties giving dry white wines will go perfectly with each other thanks to their great freshness and their fruity and mineral side. Notes that will be able to associate with the smoked meat and the acidity of cabbage.

For a successful wine & food pairing, we recommend a Pinot Blanc or Riesling from the Classic range. Or opt for our latest wine: the dry, racy and fruity "Blanc Bec".

Red wine from Alsace: a possible history

For red wine lovers, there is of course also an Alsatian agreement with sauerkraut: a good Pinot Noir from Alsace. Opt for a Pinot Noir that is not too tannic and rather light, which will go well with the meats that make up this dish. Among our vintages, a glass of Pinot Noir Classic will do wonderfully well! To be served not too fresh, between 14 and 16° to be able to fully appreciate it!

Which wine with a sauerkraut from the sea?

Sauerkraut from the sea, or "sauerkraut with fish", existed long before the Alsatian sauerkraut with meat. And yes... the myth is falling apart! Hard to recognize it for the pure Alsatians that we are...

The sauerkraut from the sea was originally a dish of fishermen and boatmen gathering several kinds of fish. Today it reappears on your plates and is consumed more and more.

But what to drink with sea sauerkraut? As with traditional sauerkraut, a good Alsace white wine will go perfectly with this dish. The freshness and minerality of a Riesling, Pinot Blanc or a Sylvaner will go very well with the acidity of the cabbage and the iodized notes of the fish.

To accompany this dish and reveal its aromas, a glass of "Blanc Sec" HOPLA by Bestheim or a Sylvaner Classic will delight the taste buds of your guests.
