What to eat with a Gewurztraminer Late Harvest ?

What is a Late Harvest?

The Late Harvest is the fruit of exceptional years allowing us to obtain over-ripe grapes harvested in late autumn on parcel selections, specific terroirs.

Grapes affected by the noble rot "botrytis cinerea" are very concentrated in sugar and aromas. They give mellow and powerful wines. In Alsace, are authorized for the Late Harvest, the four Alsatian grape varieties known as noble: Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.

How to associate them during a meal? We give you our advice: which food and wine pairings for a Late Harvest Gewurztraminer?

Serve a Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives as an aperitif?

Due to its harvesting conditions and winemaking method, Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives is a very rich and aromatic white wine with a high residual sugar content.

On the palate, this Alsace wine will therefore very easily fill the palate and saturate your taste buds, thus preventing you from feeling the full bouquet of the tastings that will follow. It is therefore not recommended to drink a Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives at aperitif time. Be patient and prefer it during the meal or as an accompaniment to dessert.

Tasting a Late Harvest Gewurztraminer during the meal

For the reasons we mentioned earlier, you have to be very careful when you are going to serve a Late Harvest Gewurztraminer. This Alsatian white wine goes perfectly with foie gras, whether it is candied or fried.

But be careful! We advise you to serve your foie gras rather like a dessert, after the dish but before the dessert in order to avoid saturating your palate too early. You will then be able to take full advantage of the delicious Vendange Tardive and thus impress your guests.

If you don't want to take any risks, serve it with cheeses of character such as Munster, Maroilles or a blue-veined cheese such as Roquefort. You will see, without a doubt, that its aromatic power is equal to such flavors.

Treat yourself to a Late Harvest Gewurztraminer for dessert.

The apotheosis, the grail, the moment that everyone is waiting for during the meal is obviously the dessert (and don't tell us otherwise!). This is when you will be able to bring out your most beautiful Vendange Tardive, the one that has been waiting patiently for many years, the day it will be tasted.

A Late Harvest Gewurztraminer, opulent and elegant, will sublimate your most delicious desserts: chocolate mousse, fruit cakes, ice cream... It is time to bring out this great sweet white wine to please you! A marvel!
