Our teams have been working in the vineyards since the end of August in search of the most beautiful grapes to offer you wines and Crémants of Alsace that they are proud of. The 2020 vintage is early and promises to be remarkable!
The mild weather of this winter, the sunny anticyclonic regime combined with the wetter periods of spring, allowed the vines to develop and give the grapes a good maturity. The mid-flowering observed at the end of May was already a sign of the precocity of the 2020 vintage. The subsequent drop in temperature allowed the rapid development of the vine to slow down, lengthening the flowering period. At the dawn of the harvest, the grapes were proudly on the vines waiting to be harvested.
It is therefore since August 24 that the cooperators of the cellar are busy to harvest their vines and bring their full buckets to the wine press. The grapes used in the production of Crémant were first harvested. They must, in fact, be harvested earlier in order to keep a certain freshness and not present a too high degree of alcohol. Then, all the grape varieties necessary for the production of still wines: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, etc. Days are specially dedicated to the harvest of Grands Crus to preserve the specificity of the different terroirs.
And then, towards the end of the harvest, and if the climatic conditions have been optimal (wet mornings and sunny afternoons and moderate heat), we will harvest the last over-ripe grapes. The latter must be affected by what is called botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. Grapes highly concentrated in sugars give exceptional cuvées such as late harvest or noble grain selections.
The harvest period is crucial for all vine workers and producers of wines and Crémants d'Alsace. It is the starting point for the coming year. It is also an opportunity to regroup and work collectively in joy and good humor (and with respect of the sanitary measures, of course!). A beautiful period of sharing in perspective!
