Pinot Blanc & Auxerrois

Well-balanced and powerful

Alsace Pinot Blanc is one of the region’s few blended wines. It is often combined with the less acidic Auxerrois, which brings roundness to this great combination. Also known as Klevner in Alsatian, Pinot Blanc is a generous Alsace wine with superb character.

Alsace Pinot Blanc is usually very pale and beautifully clear. It is a fresh wine, rich without exuberance, with aromas of peach, apricot, even citrus, and a hint of white flowers. Spicy notes emerge on the palate, with relative acidity. This beautifully-balanced white wine is both tender and powerful.

One of the top three grape varieties

Pinot Blanc vines, originally from Burgundy, were introduced to Alsace in the late Middle Ages. Auxerrois, on the other hand, is a variety from Lorraine that has only recently been grown in the region (since 1950).

The development of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois, used to produce Crémant d’Alsace, a recognised appellation since the 1970s, has mirrored that of the sparkling wine since that time. They now occupy 21% of the Alsace wine-growing area compared to 11% in 1969. Auxerrois is the third most-cultivated grape variety in the Alsace region, after Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

A LIGHT WINE a staple amongst Alsace wines

Pinot Blanc is the lightest of Alsace wines It sits naturally between the dry whites (Sylvaner and Riesling) and the mellower, sweeter wines (Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris).

Pinot Blanc wine has Appellation d’Alsace Contrôlée status. It is ideally suited to the terroirs around the towns and villages of Pfaffenheim, Barr, Guebwiller, Rouffach and Ribeauvillé.
