Grand Cru Marckrain

ON THE HILLS ABOVE BENNWIHR

Planted between 200 and 300 metres above sea level, the vines of Grand Cru Marckrain lie just at the head of the Kaysersberg Valley, south of the village of Bennwihr. This vineyard faces east-south-east and benefits from the Colmar region’s very favourable and specific micro-climate. It covers an area of 53.35 hectares.

A limestone soil

The terroir is composed of coastal conglomerates from the Oligocene epoch. The soil is marl-limestone with a preponderance of oolitic limestone pebbles with interbedded marl.

SEEKING OUT THE CHARACTER of the terroir

The grape variety which thrives best in this terroir is Gewurztraminer, producing powerful, flavoursome wines packed with complex, expressive aromas. Marckrain is also well-suited to Pinot Gris, producing wines of greater refinement and discretion, though still endowed with the heady aromatic complexity so typical of the terroir.

A Celtic heritage

The village of Bennwihr, attested since 777 as the Domaine de Beno and also known as Beno Villare, is crossed by a road first used by the Celts, which ran across the Vosges foothills and along the slopes of Marckrain.
