The village of Bennwhir belonged to the famous Teutonic knights in the middle ages then to the powerful “Seigneurs de Ribeauvillé”. Its villagers have always been dreamers, known as the “Chasseurs de Lune” or Moon Hunters, always ready to go off the beaten track.
They showed audacity to have demanded and obtained- their civil rights and liberties at that time. They showed uprightness and honesty when later in history, all the villagers, dedicated to wine, swore in union to sell “an honest measure for a moderate price”.
